Packet capture is controlled from the Capture tab:
|
Start
|
Click Start to begin packet capture on the selected physical interface.
|
|
Stop
|
Click Stop to end packet capture.
|
The space-bar is a synonym for the Start and Stop buttons.
If the Start button is pressed when the interface is unavailable, the capture state will change to “wait” and FrameSeer will wait until Mac OS X says that the interface is available. As soon as the interface becomes available, the capture will begin automatically. Clicking the Stop button while FrameSeer is waiting cancels the operation.
If Dynamic Display is enabled in the Capture Preferences, packets will be displayed as they are delivered to FrameSeer. If Dynamic Display is not enabled, FrameSeer will wait until the Stop button is pressed before it displays any packets. Dynamic Display consumes additional CPU resources and may affect capture performance if the network interface is busy.
Holding down the Option key as you click on the Start button inverts the Dynamic Display setting for that capture operation.
During a capture, the progess indicator shows the amount of buffer space consumed. The overall size of the buffer is controlled from the Capture Preferences. If the buffer fills, capture stops automatically.
Clicking the Start button a second time discards all packets from the previous capture and starts a fresh capture. If you do not wish to discard the packets from the previous capture, open a new FrameSeer document before starting the new capture.
You can also control captures from FrameSeer’s contextual Dock menu (click and hold on, or control-click on, or right-click on FrameSeer’s icon in the Dock). The Start/Stop command in the Dock menu works like this:
-
If the Start command is enabled, choosing it will cause the frontmost window to begin capturing.
-
If the Start command is disabled, it means that the frontmost window is not capable of capturing. Either bring a different window to the front, or open a new FrameSeer window.
-
If Stop is enabled, choosing it will cause the associated window to stop capturing.
-
If all windows are off-screen because FrameSeer is hidden or you have minimized all windows, the Start and Stop commands will apply to the first window in the list of windows in the Dock menu.
If you enable the Auto-start on launch setting in Capture Preferences, a capture will start automatically on your Primary Interface when the first window opens each time you launch FrameSeer.
