Setting Preferences: Decoding and Searching

The Preferences... command opens the preferences dialog. Clicking on the Capturing & Searching tab reveals the following controls.

Decoding
Maximum width of hex & ASCII columns

Use this slider to control the maximum number of bytes shown in a single row of the Decode tab. The minimum is 8 bytes, which promotes efficient use of screen space for the majority of decoded fields. When examining decodes which contain payloads with a significant amount of textual information, wider columns may be appropriate.

The slider steps in multiples of 4 bytes up to 32 bytes.* Changes made here will immediately update any open documents. This preference affects the display in the Decode tab, and decode information copied to the clipboard or saved via Save Selection. However, printed decodes always use a column width of 8 bytes.

* For an even wider display, note that the ASCII column in the Decode tab can be selected and copied to the clipboard. Using the Finder’s Show Clipboard command, it is then possible to view the entire payload at your maximum screen width.
